Virginia Tech Dining Services is a key partner in the university’s effort to reduce food waste. Dining currently sends about 300 tons of food waste and compostable service ware each year to an off-campus composting facility, material that could eventually be processed at the planned facility at Kentland Farm. ROANOKE – The Alleghany girls got some dirty work done in the paint and overcame their nemesis – the free throw line – to post a 61-36 Blue Ridge District thrashing of the Northside Vikings.

Analea Deeds, Sara Church and Beth Mason crashed the boards and the Lady Mounties made 25 of 31 free throws (81 percent) in the victory.

“Big district win,” said Alleghany coach Danny Keene this morning. “The biggest thing was the free throw line. My goal is to be 67 percent a game and we shot 81 percent. It was the difference maker in the game.

“We also ran our zone defense last night better than any team that I have ever coached,” added Keene. “The girls really got after it. The bench played well and we were physical in the paint.

“Analea, Sara and Beth pulled down a ton of rebounds and we played really well under the basket,” added the AHS coach. “The bench played well and gave us some quality minutes. It was a total team effort.”

Deeds paced the Mounties (1-5 BRD, 5-13) with 17 points, while Kelsey Brown added 10. Mason and Kayla Buchanan finished with eight points each, while Church and Paige Irvine scored six apiece.

Laurel Burdette added three, Kristian Wiseman chipped in two and Catherine Fornwalt rounded out the Alleghany scoring with one point.

The Lady Mountaineers are back in action Friday on the road at William Byrd. The game will be played at William Byrd Middle School.
