In Alleghany’s 60-33 loss to Glenvar Thursday, there were two things that Coach Keene’s team could not overcome, hot shooting and the inability to make free throws.
One player who had a hot hand was Senior guard Jessi Strom who went on to lead Glenvar in scoring with 22 points on the night. Her coach Nick Stewart praised his senior guard by saying, “In the first half she came out aggressively on offense, got to the foul line, and she did the things that we came out and asked her to do.”
Joining Strom on a good shooting night was senior forward Kelsey Meador who went a perfect 6-of-6 from the field and 2-of-3 from the foul line to chip in with 14 points for the Highlanders.
For Coach Keene’s Mountaineers, they had a decent shooting night from the field going for a 56 percent clip, but their 5 for 18 performance from the stripe eliminated any chance of the Mounties from making this a close matchup. Coach Keene went on to say about his team’s foul shooting, “Going down the stretch and when you’re 5 of 18 from the foul line and not scoring, you’re just digging yourself a little bit deeper.”
Leading the Mounties in scoring was Kayla Buchanan with eight points. Paige Irvine and Beth Mason scored six points apiece. Analea Deeds scored four points. Sara Church added three points. Savannah Beard and Kristen Wiseman scored two points. Kelsey Brown and Amanda Wheeler concluded the scoring with one point apiece.
In the JV game, Glenvar defeated the Mounties 41-30 with Haley Green leading the Highlanders with 18 points.
Karleigh Thompson led Alleghany with 11 points, Kelsey Nida scored six points, Allison Williams and Courtney Gillespie scored five points apiece, Kari Simmons added two, and Darien Nagel rounded out the scoring with one point.
The Lady Mounties (2-5) will be back in action next Tuesday against Parry McCluer with the JV game tipping off at 5:30 PM.
