The Sara Rice Pryor Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy met February 16 at the home of Linda Mayer.
Dolly Parez, president, opened the meeting with the ritual and prayer. Pledges to the flags were recited and “Dixie” was sang.
Doris McCoy, secretary, read the minutes of the January meeting. They were approached with one correction.
Gloria O’Neil gave the treasurer’s report. She reported on dues paid.
Annie Sink gave the report on the miscellaneous fund.
Gloria also made a list of member’s birth date and reported on cards sent.
Joann Austin reported that she had contacted Kitty Fitzgerald’s grandson about the UDC items and he will contact the chapter about them.
Under Old Business, Doris McCoy reported that she had been contacted by Shelly Dudley about information on the courthouse, which is 100 years old.
Doris will give her information from the book, “Historical Sketches.”
Under New Business, Dolly Parez reported Elenor Price contacted her about the 2013 District Conference. The chapter will be part of it.
A planning session will be held March 2 to determine a central location and provide more information about hosting the meeting.
District Children of the Confederacy are raising money to restore and preserve two Confederate flags for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. These flags were carried into battle.
Annie sink made a motion to donate to the project. The motion was seconded by Doris McCoy and carried by the members.
The new monument for Cedar Hill Cemetery, with the names of Confederate soldiers buried there, has been delayed for two years as the chapter waited on additional names.
Creative Fabrication has been given permission by Dolly Parez to move forward with its completion.
Room will be left on the plaque to add names at a later date.
The Blue and Gray Banquet will be held at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College tonight. Social hour will begin at 6:15 p.m.
The Second District meeting will be held March 24 at Harrisonburg at The Spottswood Country Club, hosted by the Turner-Ashby Chapter. Registration is from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. and members must RSVP by March 15.
Doris McCoy reported that the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Alleghany County Courthouse will be held on Sunday, April 15.
A discussion was held on having a yard sale in the spring.
As there was no more business, the meeting was adjourned.
A program, entitled “The UDC Today” was given by Doris McCoy.
The chapter welcomed one guest, Dr. Gregory Mays, and two prospective members, Kimberly Holesclaw and Maria Mays.
