Former ACHS Standout, CFL Star Joe Fourqurean Dies

Former Canadian Football League standout Joseph Robert Fourqurean, 63, passed away unexpectedly on November 19, 2013.

Born January 6, 1950 in Covington, he was a son of the late John Robert and Annabell (Chambers) Fourqurean.

He was a member of Mt. Olivett Church in Low Moor and attended New Salem Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio.

Joe was graduate of Alleghany County High School and was a 2007 inductee into the Alleghany County High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

He was a graduate of Bluefield State College in Bluefield, W.Va., where he was inducted into Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Joe was inducted into the Bluefield State College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.

Joe played nine years for the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League, where he earned numerous awards that included being named to three separate Lions Dream Teams in 1984, 1994 and 2004 along with being named to their 50-year Dream Team consisting of the top 28 players in the club’s history.

Joe was enshrined in the B.C. Lions Wall of Fame in 2011.

Joe previously worked for the Columbus City Public Schools as a teacher in Arts and Sciences. He was currently employed with the U.S. Postal Service as a Manager of Distribution Operations at the City Gate location.

Joe was preceded in death by three sisters, Montrue Webster, Phyllis Payne, and Pauline Fourqurean; and two brothers, Jimmy and Larry Fourqurean.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Rebecca (Trigg) Fourqurean; a daughter, Nicole Wilson of Orlando, Fla., a son Joseph “J.R.” (Ashley) Fourqurean; and the love of his life, his granddaughter, Mia Fourqurean.

Joe is also survived by his sisters, Theresa Fourqurean, Richmond, Denise James, Atlanta, Ga., Frances Fourqurean, Waldorf, Md., Zina (Rick) Brown, Low Moor, Renee Brown, Clifton Forge; and his brothers, Leroy (Irene) Fourqurean, Baltimore, Md., Gregory (Maxzella) Fourqurean, Waldorf, Md., and Steven Fourqurean, Low Moor.

In addition, Joe is survived by his mother and father-in-law, Juanita and Fennissee Trigg, Bluefield, W.Va.; sisters-in-law “road dog” Carolyn (Thomas) Kennedy and Lillian (Ahart) Powers, Atlanta, Ga.

Joe had many special friends that include, Grady (Barbara) Cavness, Missouri City, Texas, Frank (Cynthia) Wooten, Erma Britford, Chris Saxon, Greg Gamble, Greg (Carolyn) Arnold, Steve (U.S. Postal Service), and Fred (Kathleen) Stith.
The family will receive friends Sunday, November 24, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Schoedinger North Chapel, 5554 Karl Road.

A funeral service will be held Monday, November 25, at 10 a.m. at Schoedinger North Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Yvette Jackson officiating.

Entombment will follow in Kingwood Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
