Leonard Warren Shifflett, 73, of Hot Springs, Virginia died Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at his residence.
He was born October 31, 1944 in Bath County, Virginia, the son of the late Layton O’dell Shifflett and Mary Pauline Graham Shifflett.
In his younger years, Leonard was employed as a construction foreman of The Vepco Pump Storage Station.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served during Vietnam.
He was a 1965 graduate of Bath County High School where he played football, basketball and baseball. Leonard was a proud member of the VFW Post 4204, Life Line Ministries, and a former member of Eden United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed volunteering for various youth activities especially the Baltimore Orioles trips. He was an avid fisherman and could always be found on Lake MooMaw with his buddies. When the fish were not biting, he could be found with his family in the woods chasing wildlife. There wasn’t a hill, valley or hollow of this beautiful county that he did not know like the back of his hand. Everyone that he crossed paths with became a better fisherman and hunter because of that knowledge. When he was not hunting or fishing, he was digging in the dirt in his gardens or snapping beans on the front porch with his “Ma” preparing for the many hours of canning his crops. He was a coach for Bath County Recreation Department through his children’s elementary careers. He was a loving husband, father, “Poppy” and friend to all.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Brenda Marie Crawford Shifflett, whom he married on September 23, 1972; three children, Tiffany Shifflett Chapman & husband Lyle of Beaufort South Carolina, Jeremy Shifflett of Winchester, Virginia and Kelly Shifflett Cooper & husband Anthony of Winchester; three grandchildren, Luci “Bug” Chapman of Beaufort, Wyatt & Olivia “His Special Girl” Cooper of Winchester; eight brothers, Columbus Shifflett & girlfriend Jeanette Bryant, Robert Shifflett & wife Charlotte both of Hot Springs, Jerry Shifflett & wife Sarah of Hightown, Virginia, Hugh Shifflett & wife Diana, Ralph Shifflett, Ron Shifflett & wife Lumina, Randy Shifflett & wife Sue and Jody Shifflett all of Hot Springs; five sisters, Jeannette Dellinger & husband Ray of Bakersville, NC, Patricia Watson & husband Frankie of Fairmont, WV, Edna Beam & husband Tom of Kerikeri, New Zealand, Sally Howard & husband Jim and Martha Peters & husband Eddie both of Hot Springs; a sister-in-law, Pat Shifflett of Killeen, Texas, two brothers-in-law, Butch Crawford & wife Lisa of Moneta, Virginia, Rodney Crawford of Covington, Virginia, two sisters-in-law, Sherry Crawford of Covington, Virginia and Bonnie Hale of Ronceverte, West Virginia; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins too many to keep up with.
