Virginia Tech Dining Services is a key partner in the university’s effort to reduce food waste. Dining currently sends about 300 tons of food waste and compostable service ware each year to an off-campus composting facility, material that could eventually be processed at the planned facility at Kentland Farm. Covington, Clifton Forge, and Alleghany County have asked WestRock to join them to reduce the over-population of dogs and cats in the area.
As a result, WestRock is providing funding to decrease spay/neuter costs through the Angels of Assisi transport program and the Roanoke Valley SPCA (RVSPCA) mobile clinic.
The program is administered by the Alleghany Humane Society, which has  agreed to administer this program for the localities. The discount on spay/neuter costs will last until the grant funding is exhausted.
This funding is only available to residents of Alleghany County, Covington and Clifton Forge.
With the grant, the cost of a spay for female cats and dogs is $37 and the cost of a neuter for male cats and dogs is $35. You must sign up and pay in advance at the Alleghany Humane Society to reserve a spot for the transport or mobile clinic.
Proof of rabies vaccination will be required when you sign up your pet. If your pet doesn’t have a current rabies vaccination, it will be done during the procedure. This is not optional.
Also included is a microchip and pain medicine. These costs are included with Angles of Assisi, but will cost $15 extra through RVSPCA mobile clinic.
The Angels of Assisi transports are scheduled every other Tuesday with same day drop off and pick up at the Alleghany Humane Society. The RVSPCA mobile clinic will perform surgeries on site at the Alleghany Humane Society once per month.
For more information on the transports, or to check on dates for the mobile clinic, call the Humane Society at 862-2436.
