COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The VMI Commander Jazz Band performed Sunday afternoon at the Jackson River Sports Complex, drawing a steady crowd as the City of Covington launched its summer-long Virginia 250 events.

The performance featured a mix of swing-era standards and contemporary selections, with the 17-cadet ensemble and vocalist delivering a big band sound modeled after the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Audience members gathered throughout the afternoon, with cake served during the event.

Sponsored by Bill Phillips ’47 and Buck Cavedo ’47, the group continues to expand its musical library and equipment. Members of the band are selected by audition from all classes and majors at Virginia Military Institute, reflecting a wide range of academic backgrounds within the ensemble.
