WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — The Greenbrier Resort is suing insurance companies over damage from the 2016 flood.
According to a news release, the Greenbrier Hotel Corp, along with the Justice Family Group LLC, filed a lawsuit Feb. 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.
The suit names Resort Hotel Insurance Services Inc., Ace American Insurance Co. and several other insurers and brokers as defendants.
The claims stem from the damage to The Greenbrier Hotel and other Greenbrier properties during a flood in June 2016.
The lawsuit claims the insurance companies owe at least $100 million to fix damage from the flood that hit The Greenbrier Resort and surrounding properties.
The suit alleges that one insurer has refused to cover a $6.1 million title sponsorship fee the Greenbrier lost when it had to cancel the 2016 Greenbrier Classic golf tournament. The hotel also claims the insurer has refused to cover more than $5 million in sponsorship fees the Greenbrier incurred and refused to cover a $10.4 million title sponsorship fee due to PGA America for the tournament.
The news release states that Greenbrier entities and the Justice family spent almost three years trying to resolve all of the claims and receive compensation for the losses incurred, but the insurance companies failed to pay the losses.
The hotel claims the defendants’ actions denied the hotel from having the opportunity to fully profit from its businesses.
The hotel is seeking compensatory damages in the amount of $600 million.
