COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Alleghany JV softball turned a tight early contest into a decisive 12–2 win over Rockbridge County JV, breaking the game open with a third-inning surge fueled by patience at the plate, aggressive baserunning, and a steady stream of Rockbridge defensive miscues.
Rockbridge County JV opened the game with strikeout-heavy pitching sequences, but Alleghany still found ways to apply pressure. Walks, hit-by-pitch traffic, and wild pitches quickly put Cougars on base, and the lineup consistently extended innings as runners advanced into scoring position. Abby Lindsey, Savanna Hicks, Paelynn Osborne, and Elizabeth Bazzrea were frequently involved in the early base traffic that set the tone, helping Alleghany turn small opportunities into runs without needing extra-base hits.
Rockbridge briefly responded in the field and on the mound, working through strikeouts from Lydia Herstine early, but the Wildcats struggled to finish innings cleanly. Defensive lapses, including passed balls and infield errors, repeatedly extended Alleghany at-bats and kept pressure on the defense. Even when Rockbridge managed strikeouts or popouts, Alleghany’s lineup kept finding ways back on base.
The game shifted in Alleghany’s favor through the second inning, where continued plate discipline and situational hitting led to multiple runs crossing. Abby Lindsey and Paelynn Osborne both came around during a stretch that included walks and wild pitches, while McKenlee Knick, Chessie Wolfe, and Jemma Rogers helped sustain innings with traffic on the bases. Rockbridge pitching rotated arms, but Alleghany continued to capitalize on free passes and mistakes.
Rockbridge showed brief offensive life in the third and fourth innings, including singles from Kenzie Clemmer and Kaylee Slagle and baserunning pressure from Sage Reynolds and Keylie Hayslett. However, Alleghany’s defense limited damage with timely strikeouts and routine outs, including a bunt play turned into a quick out at first and several popouts handled in the infield and outfield.
The turning point came in the third inning, where Alleghany broke the game open entirely. A combination of walks, hit-by-pitch situations, and defensive errors allowed multiple Cougars to cycle through the lineup, with runners consistently advancing on wild pitches and misplays. Paelynn Osborne, Abby Lindsey, Savanna Hicks, Elizabeth Bazzrea, and others were all part of the inning-long rally that stretched the lead rapidly. Rockbridge struggled to complete defensive sequences, and Alleghany took advantage of nearly every extra opportunity.
Even as Rockbridge attempted to settle in with pitching changes and defensive adjustments, Alleghany kept pressure constant through disciplined at-bats and smart baserunning. Hits and walks continued to pile up, and once runners reached, they were frequently advanced into scoring position through passed balls and aggressive reads on the bases.
On the mound, Alleghany’s combination of Lydia Herstine and Kardyn Skidmore limited Rockbridge’s ability to build momentum. Strikeouts were scattered throughout the game, and when contact was made, the defense behind them handled key plays to prevent extended rallies. Rockbridge did manage a few singles and forced situations late, but never sustained enough offense to threaten a comeback.
By the final outs, Alleghany had turned early tension into a comfortable finish, sealing a 12–2 victory built on depth throughout the lineup, consistent pressure on the bases, and a third inning that ultimately decided the game.
