COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Alleghany responded to an early deficit with a strong late push, showing resilience in an 8-3 loss to Wilson Memorial.
The Cougars set the tone defensively in the opening inning, recording three quick outs behind clean fielding from Graham Brewster and Zeke Saville. Jalin Raether followed with a line-drive single in the bottom half for Alleghany’s first hit of the game.
After Wilson Memorial used a big third inning to build a lead, Alleghany stayed composed and continued to compete at the plate. Buddy Leisure-White and Brewster added hits as the Cougars consistently put the ball in play and created opportunities.
Alleghany broke through in the fourth. Kai Rowland delivered an RBI single to center to get the Cougars on the board, sparking momentum. The Cougars loaded the bases in the inning and forced Wilson Memorial to work through a high-pressure situation.
The biggest response came in the sixth. Raether drove in a run with a single to right, Brycen Griffith followed with an RBI hit, and a wild pitch brought in another run as Alleghany cut into the deficit. The Cougars strung together multiple quality at-bats and kept pressure on the Hornets throughout the inning.
On the mound, Raether provided a strong relief effort, holding Wilson Memorial scoreless over the final innings while recording multiple strikeouts. His work allowed Alleghany to stay within reach and continue building momentum late.
