LEXINGTON, Va. (VR) – Covington Middle School broke through Tuesday night, defeating Lylburn Downing 2-1 for the program’s first win since its launch last season.
Jesús Vargas and Bentley McCroy accounted for the scoring, each finding the net to give the Cougars the edge in a tight match. Covington generated chances throughout, with Sam Vargas, Vargas, McCroy and Dalton Vance all recording shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Sam Nickell was on fire with 25 saves, turning away consistent pressure and preserving the one-goal margin.
Defensively, Covington held firm late, with the back line limiting second-chance opportunities. The Cougars showed balance across the field, with all 11 contributing to secure the milestone victory.
