COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Big scoring innings in the middle of the game, allowed Alleghany Cougars to separate from Magna Vista and secure a 10-5 victory Wednesday night.
Magna Vista grabbed an early edge in the first inning, using an Alleghany error to plate a run for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars responded in the bottom half when P. Webb delivered an RBI single to even the score.
Alleghany built momentum in the second inning as Maddy Lowry tripled and scored on a passed ball, putting the Cougars in front 3-1. Magna Vista answered in the third with a four-run surge, highlighted by a two-run single from Kailee Spencer and additional runs aided by defensive miscues, reclaiming a 4-3 lead.
The Cougars quickly responded again in the bottom of the third when Brianna Terrell doubled home the tying run, leveling the game at 4-4.
The turning point came in the fourth inning. Alleghany pushed across three runs, fueled by an RBI double from Kaylee Nicely and additional run production that stretched the lead to 7-4. The Cougars continued to build in the fifth, adding two more runs on RBI singles from Peyton Broughman and M. Lowry to extend the margin to 9-4.
Alleghany tacked on its final run in the sixth on a groundout, bringing the lead to 10-4. Magna Vista added a run in the seventh but could not close the gap.
Lowry finished with a triple, double and multiple RBIs to lead the Alleghany offense, while Nicely and Broughman each contributed key extra-base hits. On the mound, Emma Skidmore held Magna Vista in check after the third inning, allowing the Cougars to pull away late and finish the win.
