COVINGTON, Va. (VR) –  Alleghany controlled the game from the start and powered past James Monroe 23-3 in a run-rule victory.

The Cougars struck first in the opening inning, with Trey Cook and Tucker Phillips driving the offense. Phillips delivered an RBI single, while Cook added a line-drive hit that helped Alleghany build a 3-0 lead.

Alleghany added three more runs in the second inning, capitalizing on a defensive error and continued contact hitting. Cook and Graham Brewster each recorded RBI singles. Buddy Leisure-White reached on an error that brought in a run, extending the lead to 6-0.

James Monroe responded in the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Kadyn Hines and Levi Taylor each contributed RBI singles, helping the Mavericks cut the deficit to 6-3.

Alleghany answered with a 9-run third inning. Kai Rowland delivered a key two-run single, while Brycen Griffith, Zeke Saville, and Phillips each drove in runs. Walks, wild pitches, hit-by-pitch situations, and defensive miscues all factored into the inning as Alleghany stretched the lead to 15-3.

The Cougars tacked on eight more runs in the fourth. Jalen Raether doubled, Austin Jack added a double, and Brewster tripled as part of a sustained offensive surge. Multiple RBI singles and extra-base hits kept the pressure on, pushing the lead to 23-3.

Alleghany finished with a balanced offensive attack that included multiple multi-hit performances and RBI contributions across the lineup. Brewster added a triple, Raether and Jack each doubled, and Rowland drove in runs in key spots during the third-inning rally.

On the mound, Garrett Carper started for Alleghany before Ben Skidmore and Tucker Phillips combined to close out the game. The staff limited James Monroe’s offense outside of the third inning and helped secure the run-rule victory.
