Virginia Tech Dining Services is a key partner in the university’s effort to reduce food waste. Dining currently sends about 300 tons of food waste and compostable service ware each year to an off-campus composting facility, material that could eventually be processed at the planned facility at Kentland Farm. The Covington City Public School System held a Professional Development and Instruction Day for the faculty and staff members of the Covington City Public Schools Friday.
The day featured Gena Keller of the Virginia Department of Education giving an opening lecture.
During Keller’s lecture, she told the faculty and staff of the Covington City Public School system that they have become facilitators of learning.
Keller also emphasized that students today need to have choices and need to be career ready.
“Our children have to have choices. They have to be career ready. A?college can prepare them for that career. So could a technical school, so could a community college, so could the military, so could moving with certifications in CTE?programs,”?Keller stated.
She also stated it was not a matter of college vs. not going to college, but it was a matter of what career path a student chose to take.
Later in Keller’s opening lecture, she had each staff and faculty member take part in a participation period.
During the participation period, she would have those in attendance break off into small groups to discuss the techniques they use in the classroom to help their students.
In breaking into groups, Keller hoped that the people in each group could collaborate to find ways to improve on what they are doing in the classroom or take something different an implement that themselves.
At the conclusion of Keller’s address, Dr. Shannon Fuhrman, director of instruction and technology thanked the faculty and staff for all that they do in educating the students in the Covington City Public School System.
She also remarked while that there are bad days in the education field, there are more good days and she hopes there are more good days to come.
She also hoped that what was learned in Friday’s session would be implemented when school resumes Monday to start the second semester.
