Virginia Tech Dining Services is a key partner in the university’s effort to reduce food waste. Dining currently sends about 300 tons of food waste and compostable service ware each year to an off-campus composting facility, material that could eventually be processed at the planned facility at Kentland Farm. It’s nearly postseason time for area winter high school sports.
Starting with Friday’s Three Rivers District wrestling championships at James River and the Class 1, Region C Sub-Regional wrestling tournament at Rural Retreat, the month of February is filled with basketball, wrestling, track and swim action.
Here’s a look at the postseason events:
Basketball
• Three Rivers District Tournaments: Only the top four teams qualify for the tournaments on both the boys and girls sides.
The semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday, February 13, with the title games on Thursday, February 14. All games will be played at the higher seeds.
• Pioneer District Tournaments: The Pioneer District tournaments will be held the week of February 11.
In a change this year, the Pioneer has joined the latest trend in having the highest seed host games not only in the first round, but in the semifinals, consolation and championship rounds, eliminating pre-determined tournament sites.
The boys tournament will have first round games on Monday, February 11, semifinals on Wednesday, February 13, and both the consolation and championship games on Thursday, February 14.
The girls tournament will hold their first round on Tuesday, February 12, the semifinals on Wednesday, February 13, and the consolation and championship games on Friday, February 15.
The regular season champion will join three others teams qualifying from the tournament in the Class 1, Region C tournament.
• Class 3, Region D Tournaments: The Region D tournament features eight of the 11 teams in the region, with point rankings determining seedings.
First round games in both events will be Tuesday, February 19, at the higher seeds. Semifinals will be Thursday, February 21, with the championship games on Friday, February 22.
The boys semifinals and title games will be played at Hidden Valley High School with the girls playing at Christiansburg High School.
• Class 1, Region C Tournaments: Four Pioneer District teams will join four qualifiers from the Mountain Empire District to make up the eight-team bracket.
The boys tournament will hold first round games on Tuesday, February 19, and the semifinals on Thursday, February 21, at the higher seeds.
The girls tournament will have first round games on Monday, February 18, and semifinals on Wednesday, February 20, also at the highest seed.
Both the boys and girls region championship games will be Saturday, February 23, at a neutral site.
• State Tournaments: State quarterfinals will be held either Friday, March 1, or Saturday, March 2, at the higher seeds.
Semifinals will also be at the highest seeds on Tuesday, March 5.
All state championship games are scheduled for the Siegel Center in Richmond. Class 5 and 6 state title games will be on Wednesday, March 6,
Class 3 and 4 on Thursday, March 7, and Class 1 and 2, on Saturday, March 9.
Wrestling
• Three Rivers District Tournament: Alleghany will defend their title at the TRD championships at James River on Friday. Wrestling begins at 5 p.m.
• Class 1, Region C Sub-Regional Tournament: With only Covington and Parry McCluer fielding wrestling teams, the Pioneer does not hold a district tournament. The Cougars and Blues will join Auburn, Galax, George Wythe and Rural Retreat in the sub-region tournament Friday at Rural Retreat.
• Class 3, Region D Tournament: The region event is scheduled for Friday, February 8, and Saturday, February 9, at Abingdon High School. The tournament features an all-in format with the top four wrestlers in each weight class qualifying for the state tournament.
• Class 1 West Super Regional Tournament: Castlewood hosts the event on Friday, February 8, and Saturday, February 9.

The all-in tournament features wrestlers from both Region C and Region D. The top six finishers in each weight class will qualify for the state tournament.
• State Tournament: The Class 1, 2 and 3 state tournaments will all be held at the Salem Civic Center on Friday, February 15, and Saturday, February 16.
Wrestling begins on Friday at 10 a.m., with Saturday’s state title bouts starting at 5 p.m.
Swimming
• Class 3, Region D Championships: The Christiansburg Aquatic Center will host the 3D meet on Tuesday, February 5.
The top five finishers in individual events, the top four relays teams and any swimmer who has achieved a VHSL qualifying time will advance to the state tournament.
The Three Rivers District does not hold a swim meet.
• State Championship Meet: The state meet will be held at SwimRVA?in Richmond on Saturday, February 16.
Indoor Track
• Class 3, Region D Championships: Roanoke College will host the regional on Saturday, February 16.
The top three performers in each event and top three relay teams plus any athlete that has met the state standard in a qualifying meet advance to the state meet.
• Class 1 and 2, Region C Championships: The meet will be at Roanoke College on Friday, February 15.
Just like 3A, the top three in each event advance to the state as well as athletes that have met the state standard during the regular season.
• State Championship Meet: The combined Class 1/2 state meet will be at Roanoke College on Wednesday, February 20, and Thursday, February 21. The Class 3 meet will also be at Roanoke College on Friday, February 22, and Saturday, February 23.
