Dear Editor,

As February comes to a close, we’d like to take one last opportunity to recognize School Board Appreciation Month in Virginia and to thank the individuals who serve our schools and our community.

In Alleghany Highlands Public Schools, our school board members are community members who care deeply about local students and families. They balance jobs, families, and other commitments while also giving their time to review reports, attend meetings, make tough decisions, and plan for the future of our schools.

Their work may not always be in the spotlight, but it has a real impact. From approving the budget to setting policies and listening to community feedback, they help ensure our schools remain strong and focused on student success.

We also recognize School Board Clerk Appreciation Week, observed each February. Our board clerk plays an important role in supporting the board’s work by keeping meetings organized, maintaining accurate records, and helping communication run smoothly.

We would like to personally recognize Board Clerk Karen Willis for her dedication and hard work, as well as Deputy Clerk Fred Vaughan for his support and assistance. Their commitment to doing the work well and serving our community is truly appreciated.

Throughout the year, we encourage you to take a moment to share your appreciation. A quick note, a thoughtful email, or a simple “thank you” can go a long way in letting our board members and clerks know their service matters.

We are grateful to board members Jon Lanford, chair; Jay Woodson, vice chair; Jonathan Arritt; Nicole Clemons; John Littleton; Danielle Morgan; and Bob Umstead. Please join us in thanking them for their dedication to our students and to the Alleghany Highlands community.

Warm regards,

Kim Halterman
