ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA. (VR) – Are you a motivated college student with an interest in the arts, tourism, community engagement, economic development, education, or learning more about the exciting developments happening in the Alleghany Highlands of Virginia? You may be the perfect candidate for a summer internship with an Alleghany Highlands non-profit organization!

Five local non-profits in the Alleghany Highlands are sponsoring summer internships for undergraduate or graduate students seeking experience related to the non-profit sector, community revitalization, the arts, tourism, and/or education. Internships may extend up to ten weeks and are projected to start in mid-to late- May 2026.

Wondering if this is the right opportunity for you? Megan McHenry, a 2025 intern with the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, spoke with last year’s summer interns about their experience working and learning in the Alleghany Highlands. Megan herself described the benefits of her time with the Alleghany Highlands Chamber by explaining: “Every day I learned something new and got to work with a new community leader. I was given so much creative freedom that helped me explore my ,niche within a professional workplace.” Another Summer 2025 Intern, Nicole Frye, who spent her summer at Cora Dance Alleghany, spoke about her internship by saying “Capturing rehearsals, performances, and events allowed me to connect with people and moments I wouldn’t have otherwise.”

Liam Ruddle, who interned with Clifton Forge School of the Arts, expressed, “This internship has definitely changed how I see the Alleghany Highlands. It has also given me a reason to be proud of myself, along with helping me feel fulfilled.” Each of these internships provide unique opportunities for
students to explore their interests, connect with their peers and the broader Alleghany Highlands community, and gain valuable working experience—all with the goal of informing their future career decisions.

Applications for Summer 2026 are open now! Stipends are based at $13.00-15.00/hour. The organizations listed below are advertising for these internships. Please check each website for a more detailed description of the specific internship and for application guidelines:
