LOW MOOR, Va (VR) – Alleghany’s fourth-quarter rally came up short Friday as the Cougars dropped a 70-67 Shenandoah District game to Wilson Memorial.
The Cougars trailed 37-25 at halftime and 54-43 after three quarters before making a late push. Talyn Elliott scored 14 of his 20 points in the final period, hitting four 3-pointers as Alleghany cut the deficit to one possession in the closing minutes.
Jalen Raether also finished with 20 points and Bubby Entsminger added 14 for the Cougars, who outscored Wilson Memorial 24-16 in the fourth.
Wilson Memorial managed just three field goals in the final quarter, but 8-of-9 free-throw shooting down the stretch kept Alleghany from completing the comeback.
The loss was the Cougars’ first in Shenandoah District play, dropping them to 4-1 in the league and 8-2 overall.
In the jayvee game, Alleghany fell 52-41. Talin Raether and Jaxon Brewster scored seven points each for the Cougars, while Buddy Leisure-White, Mehki Peterson and Gabe Salamanca had five apiece. Alleghany’s JV is now 3-2 in the district and 6-4 overall.
Alleghany will travel to Riverheads on Tuesday.
