Covington, Va (VR)- The Alleghany Cougars junior varsity football team managed to stave off a spirited late rally by the Rockbridge Wildcats, emerging with a narrow 30-28 victory in a game filled with momentum shifts and electrifying plays Saturday afternoon at Casey Field.
The contest appeared well in hand for Alleghany as the fourth quarter unfolded, with the Cougars clinging to a 10-point lead and the clock slipping away from the Wildcats. But as the autumn sun had long since fallen, the Wildcats made one last, desperate push, a push that would nearly erase a double-digit deficit and leave fans from both sides breathless at the end.
The dramatic sequence began when Rockbridge’s defense stepped up in a big way. With Alleghany deep in Wildcat territory, the Cougars attempted a pass that was picked off and returned an astounding 94 yards for a Rockbridge touchdown, a play that instantly cut the Cougars’ lead to 30-20. The Wildcats then lined up for a two-point conversion, opting for a quarterback keeper around the right end. But the Cougars’ defense, playing with urgency, strung the play to the sideline and knocked Rockbridge’s signal-caller out of bounds, denying the extra points and keeping Alleghany’s cushion intact.
Unfazed by the sudden turn, Alleghany’s return man fielded the ensuing kickoff and surged up field, giving the home team strong field position at the 40. After a 5-yard gain on a handoff to the running back, a dropped pass, and a failed trick play forced a rare Cougars punt, allowing the Wildcats to take over at their own 19-yard line with time beginning to wind down.
Rockbridge wasted no time making things interesting. On their first snap, they dialed up a deep pass, good for a 32-yard gain and a first down near midfield. With fresh life, the Wildcats went back to the air, but furious pressure forced the quarterback to scramble. Demonstrating poise beyond his years, Rockbridge QB No. 12 eluded the rush, tucked the ball, and broke away for a stunning 48-yard touchdown run. Suddenly, the Cougars’ once-commanding lead had shrunk to just four.
This time, Rockbridge’s two-point conversion attempt would not be denied. Unable to find an open receiver, the Wildcat quarterback tucked the ball and raced around the edge, reaching the end zone and making the score 30-28. In a matter of minutes, Alleghany’s lead had evaporated, and all momentum resided with the Wildcats.
Sensing an opportunity for a last-ditch comeback, Rockbridge attempted an onside kick, but the Cougars fell on the ball cleanly at their own 43. Needing just to expire the clock, Alleghany’s offense took the field, lined up in victory formation, and took a knee, securing the win in the closing seconds as both teams and fans absorbed the excitement of one of the season’s most competitive finishes.
The Cougars’ perseverance on defense, and their ability to advance the ball and control the clock in key moments, ultimately made the difference. However, the tenacity and resilience of the Wildcats, who refused to fold even when trailing by double digits late, was just as impressive.
For the Cougars, the victory ends their season on a high note and offers a glimpse of promising talent for the varsity squad in seasons to come. The Wildcats, meanwhile, will remember their final rally, a near-miraculous effort that fell just short.
Final score: Alleghany Cougars 30, Rockbridge Wildcats 28.
