WARM SPRINGS (VR)- The Bath County Chargers ended their football season on a tough note Friday night, falling 48-7 to the powerhouse Narrows Green Wave in a one-sided but action-packed final at Carl F. Williams Field.

The game opened with promise for Bath County who received the opening kickoff. Charger’s return man Walker Randozzo took the ball up field, giving the Chargers decent field position at around the 30. But the Narrows defense set the tone immediately, forcing three quick downs and then holding the Chargers on a gutsy fourth-down attempt. Running back Ethan Bryant managed to muscle ahead for a fresh set of downs, but the drive quickly stalled, and a punt set up the Green Wave.

Narrows wasted no time showcasing why they’re among the area’s elite. After gaining just a few yards on their first running attempts, Narrows went to the air under heavy defensive pressure. Quarterback Tucker Bryan unleashed a desperate pass that miraculously landed in the hands of his receiver for a stunning first down when a turnover on downs seemed certain. The big gain sparked the Green Wave’s offense, and Helvey promptly circled the right edge for a touchdown. The first extra point failed, but Narrows led 6-0 early in the first quarter.

A quick three-and-out by the Chargers put Narrows right back in business, and only moments later, a costly turnover changed the complexion. Bath County’s Hunter Kirby, in trying to convert on third down, aired a pass that was intercepted and returned untouched for a Green Wave score. With the ensuing extra point, Narrows extended its lead to 13-0, and momentum squarely resided with the visiting Narrows team.

Things unraveled further for Bath County on their next possession.

A fumble on a running play handed Narrows the ball deep inside Charger territory, and they capitalized immediately with a quick touchdown pass to make it 20-0 as the first quarter ended. Another touchdown in the early second quarter, this time a 20-yard scamper by Helvey after Narrows recovered their own squib kick, sent the Chargers reeling. Following a successful extra point, Narrows’ lead ballooned to 27-0.

Bath County tried to regain their footing as Kirby managed a nice completion to Jake Bogus and then found Ethan Bryant for a 22-yard connection, setting up a promising drive. But consecutive penalties and sacks dashed their momentum, and Narrows again found the end zone, pushing the margin to 34-0 on a breakaway run by Parker Bryant.

By halftime, Narrows had raced away to a daunting 41-0 advantage after adding another score late in the second quarter. Bath County’s sideline, though quiet, encouraged their players to keep fighting and find positives in the second half.

After the break, Narrows wasted little time resuming their assault. Their opening possession in the third quarter resulted in a completed touchdown pass as the receiver broke free down the sideline, pushing the margin to 48-0 after a successful extra point. Bath County remained determined, however, as Randozzo delivered a strong return near midfield, giving the Chargers a much-needed spark.

Then bolstered by great blocking, Bath County cobbled together their finest drive of the night. Kirby connected with Owen Perdue for a big 27-yard gain, and then Ethan Bryant burrowed into the end zone from eight yards out, finally putting the Chargers on the scoreboard. The extra point was good, trimming the deficit to 48-7, and drawing one of the night’s loudest cheers from the visiting fans.

Bath County’s defense stiffened momentarily as Narrows, after an ill-timed penalty for roughing the kicker, was forced to punt for the first time. Charger AJ Woodson then churned out tough yards on consecutive plays, picking up first downs and allowing Bath County to march deep into Narrows territory. A completion to Bogus gave the Chargers another first down, but time ultimately ran out before they could narrow the gap further.

With the clock winding down, both teams rotated in underclassmen and backups, while fans and coaches reflected on the season’s highs and lows. For Bath County, the night ended with heads held high despite the scoreboard, a testament to resilience shown throughout a physically demanding campaign.

For Narrows, the win capped an impressive season and served as a confidence booster heading into postseason play.

Meanwhile, Bath County will regroup, aiming to build on the progress of a season that tested them in every phase of the game, and prepare for a playoff game against an opponent seeded at the very top of the playoff bracket.

Final score: Narrows Green Wave 48, Bath County Chargers 7.
