BUENA VISTA, Va — The gridiron stage is set for the Bath County Chargers and the Parry McClure Fighting Blues to renew their district rivalry in a high-stakes game of football Friday night at Parry McClure High School.

With both teams seeking to secure their positions in the playoff conversation, fans can expect a fierce battle featuring strong defensive lines, standout rushers, and the hunger to bounce back from recent setbacks.

Bath County (4-3) heads into the matchup after a tough loss to district leader Craig County, falling 28-0 in a game where their normally potent offense was stymied. The loss snapped a run of consistent scoring for the Chargers, who have otherwise shown resilience under head coach Jake Phillips. Phillips, who has led the team to both its wins against McClure since 2017, will be looking to get his squad back on track and to close the gap in what has been a competitive district race.

On the other sideline, Parry McClure (4-4) is also coming off a tough defeat at the hands of Craig County, a 33-6 setback that marked the Blues’ lowest offensive output this season. Nevertheless, the Buena Vista squad has enjoyed memorable moments, including a 95-yard record-setting touchdown pass from quarterback Nathan Glass to wide receiver Zavion Dunn. Both were honored earlier this season for breaking a school record that stood for nearly five decades.

Friday’s contest promises to be tightly contested. Both teams have put up similar scores against common opponents, and the latest meeting comes after Bath County’s blowout 63-6 win over Parry McClure last November, a result that the Blues, playing at home this year, are eager to avenge.

Bath County’s path to victory will likely rely on its formidable offensive and defensive fronts. First-year starting quarterback Hunter Kirby has excelled, thanks in part to a line that has consistently opened running lanes and protected the pocket, enabling both the ground and aerial attacks. Senior running back Ethan Bryant has been the focal point of the Chargers’ offense, frequently torching defenses and averaging over 150 rushing yards per game. The tandem of guard Hernan and tackle Marcos Malpica, known for creating sizable holes on the line, will be key in maintaining that production.

Wide receiver Walker Randozzo, another key piece to the Charger puzzle, averages three catches and eleven yards per reception, giving Kirby a reliable option when stretching the field. On defense, the Chargers have excelled at containing ground games, putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks and frequently stifling runs up the middle. However, the secondary has suffered—most notably with Isaac “Ike” Phillips expected to miss the remainder of the season due to injury. His absence could open opportunities for the Blues’ passing game.

Parry McClure, under head coach Jeremiah Brockenbrough, brings a balanced attack led by Glass. The Blues offense has demonstrated explosiveness, as illustrated by the season’s opening victories and their convincing 35-16 win over Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy. Parry McClure’s passing prowess, particularly Glass’s ability to connect with targets like Dunn and Quentin Rosser, has been a defining strength—one the Chargers’ secondary must respect.

The Blues’ season has been marked by streaks: impressive home wins followed by challenging losses against tough foes such as James River and Luray. Their 4-4 record masks the improvements the team has made on both sides of the ball, though their performance against Craig County exposed some vulnerabilities, particularly in the trenches.

Friday’s game could go in several directions. If historic trends persist, Parry McClure and Bath County could grind out a low-scoring defensive struggle, where line play and turnovers make the difference. Alternatively, both offenses could find their rhythm and turn the match into a shootout, with playmakers like Ethan Bryant and Zavion Dunn pivotal in flipping the script.

Coaches on both teams have emphasized the need for adjustments.

“We’re going to analyze Parry McClure’s offense closely and develop a game plan” an assistant coach for the Chargers said earlier in the week. Defensive coordinator staff have also worked to ensure the team adapts to playing without Phillips in the secondary.

For Parry McClure, motivation is high to defend their home field, break Bath County’s modest streak in the rivalry, and solidify their playoff ambitions. With both clubs’ postseason hopes hinging on a strong finish to district play, the outcome Friday night could ripple through the remainder of the season.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Fans for both programs are expected to turn out in force, energizing a matchup that could either rekindle Bath County’s scoring touch or herald a statement win for Parry McClure.
