COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Covington City Council held a public hearing Monday, August 25, to hear from candidates seeking to fill the vacant District One seat. Residents and council members attended the session to listen to the candidates’ statements and ask questions.
Tammy Scruggs-Duncan and David Goff each addressed the council, outlining their qualifications and reasons for seeking the position.
Scruggs-Duncan, a lifelong Covington resident, has served the community for decades, including positions on the local school board and as executive director of the Alleghany Highlands Arts Council for 30 years. She emphasized her dedication to education and the arts, saying, “I am a reasonable person with a deep allegiance and love for this city, who will listen to its citizens and work for their welfare.”
Goff, also a lifelong Covington resident, highlighted his experience as a business owner in the city for more than 20 years. He noted his involvement with various community groups and expressed a commitment to the city’s continued growth. “I have a great interest in seeing the community continue to grow and prosper, as we face the challenges that lie ahead,” he said.
Council members asked both candidates questions about how they would communicate with citizens and ensure important information reaches the community. They were also asked whether they would run for election after completing the interim term. Both indicated they would consider pursuing election if their time on council proved productive.
The council is scheduled to meet again on September 2 to continue discussions and determine who will serve the remainder of the District One term.
