LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany High School varsity volleyball team took the court Thursday night in the Cougar Den for their first scrimmage of the 2025 season, hosting the Northside Vikings. Northside is coming off a 2024 campaign where they finished 6-19 overall and 4-6 in their region. The Cougars, fresh off winning the 2024 TRD title with an impressive 24-5 overall record and 11-1 in region play, took this early opportunity to measure where they stand. The ladies won all four of their matches on Thursday night with a strong dominance on the court. Head Coach Thumper Leitch said the girls performed about to expectations for the first scrimmage, noting that half of the rotation were players stepping up to the varsity level this season. Leitch said the team showed a strong presence at the net, but acknowledged there’s work to be done on the defensive side. “The new hitters have the talent to perform at this level,” Leitch said. “I’m sure they will come around quickly.” As they prepare for their final scrimmage before the regular season, the coaching staff will look to make adjustments. “For the next scrimmage we’ll try to narrow down our positions and rotations a little. With only two practices between scrimmages, it likely won’t be a lot of change,” Leitch added. The Lady Cougars will be back in action Tuesday when they host Greenbrier East in their final tune-up before the season begins.
