CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (VR) – Mountain Gateway Community College proudly announces the return of Matt McGraw, Chief Workforce Officer, following his participation in the Fulbright Specialist Program in Sri Lanka. Selected by the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, McGraw spent part of the summer working with the Sarvodaya Shramadana, an organization recognized globally for its efforts in peacebuilding, civic engagement, and sustainable development.

During his time in Sri Lanka, McGraw provided training and curriculum support aimed at fostering global citizenship, service-based education, and inclusive learning. He worked closely with Sarvodaya educators and leadership teams, supporting their mission to empower individuals and communities through education rooted in compassion, equity, and self-reliance.

In addition, he developed a strategic plan to guide the creation of Sarvodaya University.

“My Fulbright Specialist placement with Sarvodaya in Sri Lanka has been truly transformative. The unique blend of profound spiritual heritage and vibrant community spirit here is unlike anywhere else, deeply enriching every interaction. I am consistently touched by the genuine kindness of the Sri Lankan people, whose hospitality makes you feel instantly at home.

Witnessing the Sarvodaya Movement’s unwavering commitment to holistic community upliftment, driven by compassion and self-reliance, offers a powerful model for global development.”

McGraw was one of more than 400 U.S. citizens selected annually for the Fulbright Specialist Program, a highly competitive opportunity that supports global academic and professional exchanges. Participants are chosen for their demonstrated expertise and leadership in their fields, as well as their ability to build meaningful international partnerships.

“We are tremendously proud of Matt and this well-deserved recognition,” said Dr. John Rainone, President of Mountain Gateway Community College. “His experience abroad will strengthen our own programs here at home. It’s not just about where he went, it’s about what he brings back
and how those lessons will enhance the way we teach and serve our students.”

The collaboration established the groundwork for continued dialogue between MGCC and Sarvodaya. McGraw will begin applying his learnings this fall by integrating new perspectives into MGCC’s workforce curriculum, community engagement initiatives, and instructional design.

His insights will help deepen the college’s approach to inclusive, student-centered education while reinforcing MGCC’s commitment to preparing learners for meaningful contributions in an interconnected world.

Fall 2025 enrollment at Mountain Gateway Community College is now open. MGCC offers flexible, affordable pathways for students of all ages in fields such as healthcare, education, skilled trades, and more. To learn more or apply, call Student Services at 540-863-2820.

Clifton Forge resident Joan Vannorsdall was among the featured speakers at AHA: Law during the past school year. An author and retired schoolteacher, Vannorsdall served on the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors from 2017 to 2021, representing the Clifton Forge East District. She originally intended to become a lawyer but chose education after falling in love with literature. From left: Peyton Broughman, Vanorsdall, and Kaitlyn Petrero.
