The Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of Covington, by action of the session on April 10 and by vote of the congregation on Sept. 1, has honored Cecil Edgar Walton Sr. with the title of Elder Emeritus.
He was honored in a special service following the morning worship service on Oct. 20.
Mr. Walton was born in 1931 and baptized in the Edgemont church on Nov. 27, 1942.
He was elected to serve as deacon and ordained/installed to that office in 1969. Cecil was elected a trustee of the congregation in 1980.
He was elected to serve as a ruling elder and ordained/installed to that office in 2005.
As an officer, he has faithfully served the Edgemont congregation for over 50 years.
Cecil married Helen June Kerseys in the Edgemont church on Nov. 24, 1951. Their children actively participated in the congregation and included Deborah Lynn, Cecil E. (Chuck) Jr., Jill Yvonne and Mark Steven.
Mr. Walton served his country as a corporal in the U.S. Army and is a veteran of the Korean War.
A 53-year Masonic veteran in Covington Lodge 171, Cecil was elected Worshipful Master in 1972, served as District Deputy Grand Master in 2002 and has conducted numerous Masonic funeral rites.
Dedicated service, quiet leadership and love of his family as well as his willingness to use his masonry and contractor skills to address facility improvements at Edgemont ARP Church have provided an exceptional example of Mr. Walton’s contributions to the church, his family, the Alleghany Highlands community and the service organizations of which he has served.
Mr. Walton continues to provide an effective demonstration of dedicated leadership and service to the Edgemont congregation and the Alleghany Highlands.
The Rev. Donnie Bowker is pastor of the Edgemont ARP Church. The church is located at the corner of Edgemont Drive and Church Avenue in Covington.
