COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany Highlands Regional Library will launch its annual summer reading program with online registration beginning Monday May 12th. The program will officially begin on Tuesday, May 26th and continue through Thursday, July 31st. This year’s theme is “Color Our World.”

The program is for readers of all ages and divided into four categories: preschool (ages 0-5); kids (ages 6-11); teens (ages 12-18); and adults (age 19 and older). There will be registration prize bags, as well as prizes awarded when participants attain the reading goals set for each category. Readers will have an opportunity to earn up to 10 visits to our “SRP Prize Tent”, filled with an array of fun prizes for all ages. All participants completing the summer challenge will also be entered into a grand prize drawing for their age group. To register, visit the AHRL website at www.ahrlib.org and click the registration link. Readers may begin logging time spent reading on May 26th. Logging your reading minutes is easy using the Beanstack Tracker App available for download on your phone or tablet. You may also pick up a reading log at the AHRL if you prefer to log minutes by hand.

SRP 2025 events will kick off with “Paint & Popsicles” on June 4th from 1:00 to 3:00pm in the Community Room. Kids are welcome to stop by during that time to help paint a collaborative summer reading mural and enjoy an ice cream treat. A variety of summer programs and events will be offered for children, teens, and adults during the months of June and July. We have two exciting and interactive shows scheduled again this year.

First, on Friday June 20th, Steve Somers the Amazing Teacher will present “Pigments of Your Imagination”. This show will be sponsored by Peoples Bank. Then on Friday July 28th, Science Heroes will be performing “Adventure of the Missing Color”. This show will be sponsored by Atlantic Union Bank. Both programs will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church in Covington.

Additional programs will include Summer Storytimes for ages 0-5 with Miss Tori and Spirit, our Pet Partners therapy dog, crafts for kids and teens, Douthat State Park’s “Read with a Ranger” story and animal interaction, family movie night, Bingo, adult crafts, and much more. We will also be kicking off our new teen book club, Pizza & Pages. Please access our website calendar at www.ahrlib.org for event dates and times or pick up an events flyer at the library. We are located at 406 W. Riverside St. in Covington.
