COVINGTON, Va. (VR) -  The Covington VA250 Carnival wrapped up Saturday night with a boom — literally — as a spectacular fireworks display brought the three-day celebration to a close.
The event drew strong crowds throughout the weekend, with Saturday night attracting the largest attendance. Families and visitors filled the carnival grounds, enjoying rides, games, food vendors, and live entertainment. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, screams from thrill-seekers, and the aroma of classic carnival favorites.
The event was well received across the Alleghany Highlands, with many attendees suggesting it should become an annual tradition.
Saturday night's entertainment featured REO Survivor and Co., who delivered a high-energy performance at the amphitheater that kept music fans entertained throughout the evening.
The celebration concluded with a fireworks show that lasted nearly 20 minutes, lighting up the night sky and providing a memorable ending to the weekend festivities.
Covington Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Worley thanked the many volunteers, sponsors, organizations, and community members who helped make the event possible.
It had been a very long time since the Alleghany Highlands hosted an event of this size and scope. Thanks to the efforts of Worley and countless others behind the scenes, the VA250 Carnival proved to be a successful celebration and a fitting tribute as America approaches its 250th birthday. CLIFTON FORGE — A sold-out crowd filled the Historic Masonic Theatre on Sunday evening for the Virginia 250 Flag Day Patriotic Tribute, a special celebration marking America's upcoming 250th birthday.
The free concert featured the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro David Stewart Wiley, joined by special soloist Dr. E. Daryl Duff.
One of the evening's most memorable moments came during the "Armed Forces Salute," when local veterans were invited to stand and be recognized as the musical tribute to their respective military branches was performed. The audience responded with enthusiastic applause as veterans throughout the theater were honored for their service.
The presentation was made possible through the support of the Alleghany Foundation, Historic Masonic Theatre, Town of Clifton Forge, Alleghany County, City of Covington, Mountain Gateway Community College Educational Foundation, Mountain Gateway Community College, Alleghany Highlands Arts Council, and the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.

LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) – On a picture-perfect evening under blue skies and hometown pride, the Alleghany High School Cougars made history. For the first time in nearly two decades, the school hosted a home track and field meet—an event long overdue and undoubtedly unforgettable.

From the opening ceremonies to the final race, the meet was a showcase of community, spirit, and athletic excellence. With outstanding attendance from both athletes and spectators, the stands were full of energy, laughter, and emotion.

Head Coach Jeremy Bartley, alongside Erin Bartley and Charlie Rusmisel, orchestrated a flawless event with the help of the Alleghany athletic department and a crew of dedicated volunteers. Their efforts paid off, as the meet ran smoothly from start to finish—no small feat for such a momentous occasion.

Adding a unique and entertaining touch to the event was the DJ/announcer, who kept spirits high and schedules on point. Not only did he keep the athletes informed and organized, but he also kept the crowd laughing and engaged with cougar-themed jingles and commercials that became an instant hit.

The evening began on a heartfelt note, as graduating seniors were honored on the field with their families. Each family was introduced over the loudspeaker and presented with a flower—a simple but meaningful tribute that had many wiping away tears before the competition even began. After a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, the Cougars sprang into action.

And what a performance it was.

The Cougars dominated on the track and in the field, earning first place in both boys’ and girls’ team scores. The team’s energy and focus never wavered, a testament to their preparation and determination. Athletes shattered personal records, reached season bests, and competed with passion and pride.

One spectator summed up the evening perfectly: “It’s nice to see the kids have no other worries but to compete and have fun.”

Indeed, there were plenty of cheers, hugs, and even a few tears as seniors realized this was their last home meet—a chapter closing, but one written in triumph. The sound of the starter pistol, the rhythmic thud of spikes on the track, and the roar of the crowd will be remembered by all who were there.

The return of the home meet not only celebrated athletic achievement but also brought the community together in a powerful way. With so much heart poured into making the event happen, it’s safe to say this won’t be the last time the Cougars take center stage at home.

After almost 20 years, the Cougars are back—and they’re faster, stronger, and louder than ever.
