Dear Editor,
“P-L-A-N” equals a four-letter word. We have long been taught to avoid some of these. However, the town council of Clifton Forge is certainly avoiding that significant word and concept by not communicating any plans.
We voters/citizens want to see a plan for the hiring of a professional and experienced town manager. Town council’s plan was to not renew the town manager’s, Ms. Darlene Burcham, current contract. After that was achieved, we have seen very little thoughtful progress.
What are their methods for advertising the position? Will there be an interview panel? Can the taxpayers have any input? These are typical situational planning questions that need concrete answers soon.
In December, the Clifton Forge mayor told Channel 7-WDBJ News that this was “a new council with new ideas for Clifton Forge to go in a different direction.” Since they have been in office for over a year (15 months) now, what is the plan for that “new direction”? How are the ideas to be implemented?
He also said in that same interview that the vice mayor wants more diversity throughout the town. Is there a plan for such? What strategies will be used?
We voters want to continue the encouraging progress that has been made in Clifton Forge over the past decade. Volunteers are making it happen! We want to help! But we are befuddled with the lack of true communication and proposals.
Let’s avoid stagnation — and be diligent in adhering to the town charter along the ways.
Sincerely,
Martha G. Edwards
