COVINGTON, Va (VR) – The Alleghany Cougar Varsity Baseball team faced a challenging start to their season, ultimately falling to Lord Botetourt 17-6. Despite the score, the team demonstrated resilience and potential for growth as the season progresses. The game kicked off with a difficult first inning for Alleghany, as they conceded ten runs to Botetourt. However, the team showed character by regrouping and competing more effectively for the remainder of the game. Offensively, Kai Rowland stood out with an impressive performance, reaching base in all three of his at-bats. Rowland went one-for-one with two walks and added a stolen base, showcasing his ability to create opportunities on the basepaths. Trey Cook also had a productive day at the plate, driving in two runs and collecting a hit. The teams offense showed signs of life with hits coming from Jalen Rather, Tyler Jackson, Landon Arritt, Zeke Saville, and Sarge Persinger, indicating a balanced attack that will develop as the season progresses. Coach Ryan Kessinger reflected on the game, saying, “Obviously the score was pretty lopsided. It was our first live action and we settled down after the first inning.” Kessinger acknowledged the team’s defensive struggles and pitching challenges, noting, “Defensively, we had some errors and struggled with hitting spots on the mound. Giving good teams advantageous counts at bat after bat typically is going to result in crooked numbers on the scoreboard.” Despite the setback, Kessinger remained optimistic about the team’s future. “We are going to build on things we can control, improve on these things and prepare for our next scrimmage against Riverheads,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of learning from this experience. Alleghany will meet Riverheads at Casey Field on Thursday, first pitch set for 5 pm.
