We’re a mere few days away from the start of the Class 3, Region C High School boys and girls basketball tournaments.

But yet, we’re not even close to finding out who’s playing who.

So far this week, two new regional rankings have come out, with this one coming out on Tuesday.

The reason for several updated rankings, largely due to teams playing makeup games and or wrapping up their regular seasons.

For some like Spotswood, both their boys and girls teams regular seasons ended last Thursday and both will have byes in their tournaments.

Then you have other teams who will play right up until Thursday and then quickly turn things around for regionals the following day as they are set to begin on Friday evening.

Where things currently stand for the Alleghany boys team is they are currently as of Tuesday a 6-seed.

The Cougars wrapped up their regular season on Tuesday with an away loss at Carroll County.

Last week AHS was a 5-seed, but with the loss it all but ended the Cougars chances at getting into the top-5 as Liberty Christian Academy (current 5-seed) won their last regular season game and will lock in a top-5 seed.

The only other team that is threatening Alleghany for their spot is Heritage. The Pride are currently the 7-seed and wrap up their season on Wednesday at home against Loudoun Valley. A win for HHS could jump them ahead of AHS for the 6th seed.

As for the current rest of the seeding, the top-3 remains the same with a slight change. Remaining at the top is Western Albemarle, who are then followed by a new No. 2 in Spotswood. The Trailblazers were No. 3 a week ago and moved up a spot. Dropping from No. 2 to No. 3 is Staunton.

The rest of the field is very similar to last week with the exception of No. 8-10 with Monticello, East Rockingham, and Rustburg all flip flopping seeds.

And if you’re new to my rankings breakdown, if the season were to end at the very second this rundown came out, Alleghany would finish as the 6th-seed and would host No. 11 Turner Ashby in the first-round.

Moving onto the girls side and there’s a whole lot of movement going on in their rankings as of Tuesday.

We start things out with Alleghany who on Monday were ranked No. 8. However, a win over Radford helped move the Cougars up to No. 7 on Tuesday.

AHS should remain at No. 7 following their regular season finale victory over Floyd County on Tuesday evening. The Cougars won’t have enough points to move up higher than No. 7 and will have enough points to hold off Turner Ashby who are currently No. 8. The Knights regular season ended with a loss to East Rockingham.

Looking at the rest of regional rankings, we start at the top where there is a new No. 1 and that is Spotswood. The Trailblazers will be the No. 1 overall seed regardless of what happens the rest of the season as the only team chasing them was Western Albemarle, who also had their regular season come to an end this past weekend. SHS and WAHS will be the top-2 seeds in the tournament.

As for the rest of the rankings as of Tuesday, Wilson Memorial had the biggest fall. The Green Hornets dropped from No. 3 to No. 6. Meanwhile Liberty Christian Academy, East Rockingham, and Broadway, in that order all moved up a spot.

No. 9-12, Rustburg, Rockbridge, Staunton, and Heritage, all flipped one of the others into different rankings.

Not all of the rankings are official yet, as there are still games to be played, but there are teams who have unofficially locked in positions.

In all likelihood the Alleghany girls team will be the No. 7 seed and will get at least one home playoff game. Right now the Cougars would host No. 11 Staunton, but that most likely is to change.

Stay put with our social media for updated rankings and the final official tournament seedings and playoff preview.
