LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) — It’s “Scholarship Season” at Alleghany High School. The school administration and counseling staff are working to raise financial support for graduating seniors planning to further their education.
Senior Awards Night is being planned for May 7 and AHS is offering the public an opportunity to create scholarships for seniors to help offset the cost of attending a college or trade school.
College costs have been on a mostly upward trend for the last two decades. In addition to rising tuition, paying for housing, food, transportation, textbooks, and other school-related fees usually adds thousands of dollars to college expenses.
AHS was overwhelmed by the community support for scholarships last year. Between 55 and 60 members of the Class of 2024 received scholarships totaling more than $300,000. The total included scholarships from Mountain Gateway Community College.
Most of the scholarships were funded by residents, businesses, and organizations in the Highlands.
“Last year was the most successful Senior Awards Night that we’ve had,” said Heather Terrell, an academic advisor at AHS.
“It does not have to be a huge amount of money,” Terrell said. “Someone may give a scholarship for $250. That can help a student purchase books. That can help with transportation costs. Education is always more expensive than we plan.”
A scholarship’s sponsor will set the amount and establish the qualifications for applicants. The scholarships can be awarded one time only or on an annual basis.
Scholarship applications for 2025 are being posted on a bulletin board near the AHS Counseling Office. Individuals and organizations interested in continuing an existing scholarship or creating a new one can contact Terrell at heather.terrell@ahps.k12.va.us or Roberta Crizer at roberta.crizer@ahps.k12.va.us. The telephone number for the AHS Counseling Office is (540) 863-1703.
