SALEM – Playing on the road Alleghany showcased their prowess on the court Monday evening, securing a dominant 54-26 girls basketball victory over Glenvar in a meeting between two Three Rivers District foes.

This wasn’t just another win; it was a statement for the Cougars who have now won three in a row and four out of their last five games after a 4-2 start to their season.

From the opening tip Alleghany dominated both ends of the court as their defense was relentless as they held Glenvar to only eight second half points.

Glenvar kept things close with Alleghany in the first quarter as they scored 13 points and were only down five going into the second. That’s when everything went downhill for the Highlanders as the Cougars relentless defense got to them and were held to 13 points in quarters 2-4.

It was a big night from senior Bryce Leitch who poured in a game-high 22 points to lead the charge for the Cougars. Half of Leitch’s points came from the charity-stripe at the foul line as she went 11-for-14.

Senior Kelsey Nicely was second in scoring for Alleghany with 15 points.

In the win Alleghany held their fifth opponent of the season below 30 total points, all coming in victories.

Glenvar was led by Audrey Moles who scored a team-high 10.

The win for Alleghany moves them to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in district play. The Cougars host Floyd County (3-10) on Wednesday in Low Moor. The Buffaloes are also coming off of a win in their last outing on Friday over Glenvar where they won 72-16.

Alleghany 18 10 15 11 – 54
Glenvar 13 5 4 4 – 26
