City of Covington Police Department releases details following gas leak near Covington Middle School

COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – At approximately 9:08 am on Tuesday, January 14 the Covington Emergency Responders were dispatched to a gas leak in the alley between the 400 Block of S. Lexington Ave. and S. Marion Ave. The Covington Fire Department and Covington Police cordoned off the surrounding area including the Covington Middle School during the initial incident. All Covington Middle School students were redirected to other schools or designated meeting locations until the leak was contained.

Columbia Gas representatives responded to the scene and were able to contain the leak and are currently repairing the gas line. A walkthrough of the school was conducted by the Fire Department to ensure there were no residual gas remaining in the school. No injuries have been reported at this time and all roads with the exception of the effected alley have been re-opened. Please avoid the area until Columbia Gas has completed their work.
