COVINGTON- It was another lopsided victory for undefeated Alleghany following their 34-7 Three Rivers District victory over the previous unbeaten Glenvar last Friday at Casey Field in Covington.
The Cougars path now is clear as mud towards a district title. Standing in their way now are Patrick County, James River (Buchanan), and Floyd County, who are a combined 9-13 this season.
Alleghany (26.57) heads into this week’s Region 3C playoff power rankings steady at the third spot for the fourth straight week.
Ahead of the Cougars remain Liberty Christian Academy (28.33), who are undefeated at 6-0 and currently the top ranked team in the region. Also remaining in the No. 2 spot is Turner Ashby (27.14).
Something we talked about two weeks ago, as the season winds down to the final regular season games, if Alleghany wants to leap up to No. 2, they will need to win out and get help from Spotswood. The Trailblazers, who are on the rise following two straight blowout Valley District hosts Turner Ashby in Penn Laird to close out the season. Cougars’ fans may need to put on their Blazer caps. If AHS were to leap to the No. 2 spot, then they would secure at least two home playoff games.
Following Alleghany is Heritage-Lynchurg who remain as the No. 4 team in the current regional rankings. After that Rustburg and Staunton are tied for the No. 5 spot. That is significant because if the season ended today the Cougars would host the Storm as the Red Devils would own the tiebreaker.
Rounding at the field of eight are Wilson Memorial who are at No. 7, while Monticello who are new this week to the playoff regional tournament and are currently sitting at the eighth and final playoff spot.
Broadway stayed afloat at the No. 9 position, while the red-hot Spotswood Trailblazers moved up to No. 10.
East Rockingham has had quite the drastic change in the rankings system. The Eagles four weeks ago were sitting at the No. 7 spot are now in No. 11 after back-to-back weeks
There’s still three weeks left and these rankings are sure to change several not times.
