LOW MOOR – Last season Alleghany roared past Carroll County to a 47-0 victory at home.
That Cougars team was led by Des Jordan who had 236 total yards and two touchdowns for AHS in the win over the Cavaliers and they also got four catches and 58 yards from Xzavier Hayslett.
That game occurred during Week 7 of the high school football season.
They do so once again on Friday, but this time they will meet in Hillsville.
This time with a lot higher stakes involved.
Both Alleghany (5-0) and Carroll County (5-1) enter their Three Rivers District contest with five wins each. Alleghany’s most recent win was over the reigning state champion Radford Bobcats while the Cavaliers just took down James River 32-25 a week ago.
The stakes are just a little bit higher for Alleghany.
Two Fridays ago, the Cougars made a statement with their district win over Radford as they held the Bobcats to their second lowest scoring game of the season with only nine points.
Now, coming off of their bye week, Alleghany has a chance to not only put themselves in prime position for a district title, but also a top 3 seed in the Class 3, Region C playoff tournament.
The Cougars have already made their statement that they belong with the juggernauts of the district, but also the schools in their region.
A win over Carroll County would just further push that narrative that they are a team not to be taken lightly and would set up an absolute showdown at home next week with Glenvar.
Last year it was Jordan who put the driving forces behind the 47-point shutout over the Cavs. This year, he is a year older, and the Cougars offense might be even scarier this time around.
Led by plethora of offensive speed, skill, agility, and the whole nine yards, Jordan has all the makings of another top-tier performance come Friday night.
Jordan has done an outstanding job this season utilizing his sources around him from Carter Nicely and Gavin Via in the backfield, to Hayslett, Sarge Persinger, and company as his receivers. The Cougars offense is explosive and will be tough to stop.
Not to mention a defense that is holding opponents to around 12 points per game.
Carroll County’s fewest points scored in a game this season, 7, was against George Wythe in week four, but they have scored at least 20 in all their other contests.
However, the Cavaliers defense is also solid and they have ridden them to a couple victories this year. They allow just 19 points per game to their opponents.
The talk was Alleghany-Radford from two weeks ago being such a huge game and having such importance. Now, before the showdown with Glenvar next week, this game with the Cavs has the makings of a good one too.
Alleghany hopes to rope the Cavaliers and not get caught looking ahead to what could be a game-of-the-week type environment next Friday at home against the currently undefeated Highlanders (5-0).
