COVINGTON, Va. (VR) - The Covington Lumberjacks and Olde Town Covington have joined forces with the Christmas Mother and Salvation Army for a teddy bear drive. Teddy Bear Donations to Be Collected at Saturday’s Game

COVINGTON, Va. (VR) — The Covington VA250 Celebration opened Thursday evening at the Jackson River Sports Complex. Crowds began lining up before gates opened at 6 p.m. and quickly filled the midway. Rides provided by Coles Amusements drew steady lines throughout the evening, while food vendors served a variety of fair favorites.
The celebration continues Friday and Saturday. Gates open at 6 p.m. each day and admission is free. Ride tickets are available for purchase on site. The event concludes Saturday night with a fireworks show. Photo: Christopher Mentz, VR

Mr. Harold Jordan Snead, 80, of 1444 S. Fairlawn Drive, died Monday, October 12, 2009.
   He was the husband of the late Peggy Jean Donovan Snead.
   Mr. Snead was born March 1, 1929 in Covington, the son of the late Thomas E. Snead and Lelia Deaner Snead.
   A lifelong resident of this community, he served his country as a member of the United States Army and was stationed in Iceland and Watertown, N.Y. during the Korean Conflict.
   Harold joined the family business, Snead Buick-Pontiac Company Inc., established in 1923, at the age of 19 and was a co-owner and had served as parts service manager, used car manager and salesman until the sale of the company in 1997 and later was a car salesman for Dressler Motors.
   He was a former magistrate for the 25th District Court Services Unit from 1974 until 1985, the Covington Jaycees and Covington Civitan Club where he was instrumental in the Fort Young Reconstruction Project.
   Mr. Snead was a member of Christ United Methodist Church where he served his church as a past treasurer and current member of the Men’s Sunday school class and was a frequent visitor to Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
   He was a loving brother, husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather.
   Mr. Snead is survived by two sons, H. J. Snead II and wife Julie of Oakland Township, Mich., Jeffrey S. Snead and wife, Stephanie of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Melinda Snead-Johnson and husband, Tuffy of Covington, Melissa Snead Hickok and husband, Jeff of Richmond; and eight grandchildren, Seth Johnson and wife, Ashley, Eli Johnson, Noah Johnson, Tyler Hickok, Zach Snead, Erica Snead, Rachel Snead, and Jason Snead.
   Harold is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Edith Snead, Norma Snead and Eunice Snead and a number of nieces and nephews.
   In addition to his parents, Thomas E. Snead and Lelia Deaner Snead, and his wife, Peggy Jean Donovan Snead, Mr. Snead was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jordan Leigh Snead; six brothers, Marion M. Snead, Anthony J. Snead, Thomas J. Snead, Paul C. Snead, Raymond A. Snead and Edward L. Snead; and two sisters, Hildreth Fleshman and Florence Snead.
   A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Bowker officiating, assisted by the Rev. Michael Snider.
   Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
   Pallbearers will be grandsons and sons-in-law.
   The family will receive friends this evening from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.
   The family will receive friends at 1444 S. Fairlawn Drive at other times.
   The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422 or Covington Rescue Squad, 435 W. Hawthorne Street, Covington, Va. 24426.
