NORTHSIDE- The Alleghany Cougars opened up scrimmage play this past Friday evening at Northside, and despite some reports of the action not ending the way football should, coach Will Fields stayed focused on the play on the field and the status of his team when speaking about the Cougars time on the road at Northside.

Alleghany scored two touchdowns on the night and held Northside to just one.

The Virginian Review’s Christopher Mentz caught up with the successful head coach after the hard-fought battle on the preseason gridiron.

VR: How do you plan to keep the team motivated until the season opener?

Fields: At this point in the season, everyone is hopeful it doesn’t take much to keep the team motivated. Everyone is looking forward to our opener with Waynesboro on Aug. 30.

VR: What are some positives the team can take away from the first scrimmage of the season?

Fields: A first scrimmage, there’s always things to correct and fix. One positive coming out is that we are healthy which is always the number one concern with a preseason scrimmage.

One fun sidenote- According to social media, first-year player Nick Frye was the ringleader in keeping the visiting locker room flawless and it was his leadership that was noticed by the coaching staff before their trip back home.

As Fields said, “we left it like we found it.”
