WILLINGNESS TO HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING

US ROUTE 220 SIDEWALK

PINE STREET TO BEECH STREET

City of Covington

State Project:  UPC #121169, EN22-107-172, C-501

Proposed Project:

This sidewalk project will provide pedestrian access along US Route 220 (N. Alleghany Avenue) in a residential area with significant pedestrian activity where a sidewalk is not currently provided.  The project would install an ADA-compliant sidewalk along the eastern side of US Route 220 from E. Beech Street to E. Pine Street, a distance of approximately 1,700 feet.  The proposed alignment between E. Beech Street and E. Pine Street follows the alignment of an older brick sidewalk that was installed 50+ years prior.  The existing brick sidewalk is completely obscured by grass/vegetation and there are sections that have been completely removed; however, the sidewalk alignment follows the existing grade and right-of-way (ROW) exists to accommodate the entire proposed sidewalk project.  The project includes ADA-compliant pedestrian curb ramp improvements and crosswalks for all impacted movements with E. Beech Street, E. Cherry Street, and E. Pine Street.  At the signalized intersection of E. Pine Street, new pedestrian signals with countdown timers, pedestrian push buttons, curb ramps, and crosswalks will be installed for the crossing of US Route 220 and E. Pine Street.

Plan Review:

Additional details concerning the project including design plans, schedule and funding are available for review at City Hall – 333 W. Locust Street, Covington, VA, 24426.  Due to the size of the files, an appointment is required to view documents.

Written Request:

By this notice the City of Covington is indicating its willingness to hold a public hearing for this project if individual concerns cannot be addressed.  You may request that a public hearing be held by sending a written request stating your concerns on or before August 20, 2024. Send requests to:

David Bryant, LAP Project Coordinator, City of Covington

333 W. Locust Street, Covington, VA, 24426

Further Notice:

If a request for a public hearing is received, and the concerns addressed in the request cannot be adequately resolved, a public hearing will be scheduled at a time and place to be advertised in a future notice.

Questions or Special Assistance:

Questions regarding this project should be directed to David Bryant at 540-965-6310 or dbryant@covington.va.us.
