HARRISONBURG – A doubleheader last Monday, which was originally scheduled in Covington at Casey Field, was moved to the turf field at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg. Despite the move the Lumberjacks prevailed victorious with a walk off game-winner in game one of the Valley Baseball League doubleheaders winning 5-4 in extra innings (8 innings).
Wilfred Gonzalez began the bottom of the eighth inning at second base (VBL extra inning rule, last out batter starts a new inning off at second base in extra inning play). Gonzalez would advance to third base on a ground out from Gregory Melo as he helped advance the runner into further scoring position.
One batter later, looking to end the game, Daniel Restrepo hit a hard line drive down the third base line, unfortunately, it was right to the third baseman for the second out of the inning.
Looking to extend the game to a second extra inning, Covington wanted to make sure the game didn’t go any further than it needed to with another game looming. With two outs, Kaleb Henry hit a walk-off RBI single, scoring Gonzalez.
The home/away Turks, playing at their home stadium as the road team, jumped out on Covington to a quick 3-0 lead in the first 1 1/2 innings. The Turks scored one run during the 1st inning on a sacrifice fly out and two in the second on RBI singles from Brett Wehringer and Cooper Prince.
The Lumberjacks wouldn’t wait any longer to answer in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from Chenar Brown which cut the deficit to two runs at 3-1.
