HARRISONBURG – Playing their second game of their away-home doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, playing as the home team, Covington dropped game two of their doubleheader to the Turks losing 5-4 in 7-innings, flipping the score from the first game.
In a pivotal moment during the top of the fifth inning, Harrisonburg broke a 3-3 tie game with two runs in the inning on an RBI double from Jack Cannizzaro (2-for-4) and an RBI single from Anthony Paskell (2-for-2).
The two-run advantage would be just enough for the Turks to escape with a victory and not having to play a second extra inning game in a row on the same day.
Leading 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning Covington would get close to forcing extra innings all with two outs. After the first two batters were set down, Nick Paszt (1-for-3) reached first base on a single. Kaleb Henry (2-for-3) then crushed the ball deep into the outfield which allowed Paszt to score all the way from first base. With the Lumberjacks now within a run, Dariel Castillo (0-for-4) fouled off a 1-2 pitch that would have tied the game had it been fair. On a 2-2 pitch count, David Bell struck out Castillo swinging to end the game.
It was a struggle for the Covington offense in the second game of the doubleheader. For a second game in a row the Lumberjacks offense provided 10 hits as a team. However, the offense left 12 runners stranded in seven innings. Henry, Carlos Castillo (2-for-4), and Spencer Williams (2-for-4) each had a pair of hits for the Jacks’.
In 2.1 innings out of the bullpen, Kevin Rodriguez did his best to keep Covington in the game. Rodriguez was perfect during his time on the mound as he did not allow a hit or a baserunner and struck out one. Rodriguez came in relief of Jaxon Seritt (L) during the 5th inning. Seritt took the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) in 4.2 innings where he walked two and struck out one.
