COVINGTON, Va, (VR) - Families turned out in large numbers Saturday for the City of Covington Parks and Recreation’s Youth Day, enjoying a full afternoon of activities and entertainment. The event featured performances from two dance troupes from the Alleghany Highlands, while kids took part in archery, painting, the bungee trampoline, fishing with Douthat State Park, kart racing, free putt-putt golf and more. The well-attended event highlighted another outstanding job by the City of Covington Parks and Recreation staff in bringing the community together for a fun-filled day. Bruce Robert Kersey, Age 61, went home to be with the Lord on January 9th 2010 following an extended illness.

He was at home surrounded by his loving family and friends singing gospel hymns and giving praise to the Lord.

Bruce was born, July 3rd 1948 in White Sulphur Springs, WV.

He attended WV Tech and earned a Business Degree from Beckley Jr. College.

He was preceded in death by parents: George Luther Kersey and Myrtle Katherine Kersey; Father-In-Law George Nelson Lynch, Mother-In-Law Anna Loretta Lynch; and Nephew Joshua James Clendenin. Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 39 years Linda Irene Kersey of White Sulphur Springs. Daughters Jennifer Bittinger and husband T.W. of Alvon, WV. Latisha McNeeley and husband Doug of White Sulphur Springs, WV. Son Bruce Robert Kersey II (“Boo”) and wife Amanda of Alvon, WV. Grandchildren: Shyanna Bittinger, Kaedin Bittinger. Sisters Janet Taylor and husband Doug of Smithville, VA; Carolyn Arthur and husband Sam of White Sulphur Springs, WV. He was survived by many Sister-In-Laws: Anna Gail Ryder and Husband Noel of Alvon, Patsy Hollandsworth and Husband Ronnie of Alvon, Nellie McClintic and Husband Bobby of Alvon, Vickie Caldwell and Husband Buck of White Sulphur Springs, Sammy Coleman and Husband Elmer of Alvon, Bonnie Spinks and Husband Buck of Alvon. Survived by Brother-In-Laws: George Henry Lynch and Wife Christi of White Sulphur Springs, Mike Lynch and Wife Debbie of White Sulphur Springs, Johnny Lynch and Wife Shirley of Alvon. Bruce was survived by many proud Nieces and Nephews and his faithful companion “Precious.”.

Bruce was a proud Truck Driver for Lynch Construction, Inc. in White Sulphur Springs for 34 wonderful years where he was known as “Bandit”.

He was a Retired Sergeant First Class with the U.S. Army Reserves for 27 years of meritorious service with A Co. 2/319th 7th BDE. 80th Div. TNG. Bruce was a WVSSAC Referee for over 25 years in Southern WV and the Alleghany Highlands. He was an avid sports fan and the #1 fan of the Miami Dolphins and Jeff Gordon.

Of all of his titles, his greatest accomplishment was being a born-again Christian where he was a member of the Alvon United Methodist Church and sang in the Alvon Choir for over 25 years. He believed in Isaiah 53:5 “And by his stripes we are healed.”

The family will receive friends Monday, January 11, 2010 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the Alvon United Methodist Church.

Funeral service will be conducted by brother-in-laws: Rev. Bobby McClintic, Buck Caldwell and also Rev. Gary Phillips on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 11:00am at the Alvon United Methodist Church.

Burial service immediately following at the Lynch Family Cemetery in Alvon, WV with Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alvon United Methodist Family Life and Youth Activity Center HC 70, Box 416 White Sulphur Springs, WV 24986

Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, is serving the family.
