The Snack Pack Program, sponsored by God’s Covering Inc. (advocate for safe, healthy children and families) has begun in the Alleghany Highlands.
The program will provide nutritious snacks for elementary school children grades Pre-K through third grade that are on free or reduced lunch that are nutritionally challenged. The organization’s plan is to serve children in need in all schools and all grades when funds and church participation can become sufficient.
The program will begin by serving one Friday per month until all children can be served. As the program grows, Fridays will be added until all children are served each Friday during the school year.
Six nutritious snacks are chosen from the following: cereal bars, Kashi granola bars, peanut butter crackers, pretzels, applesauce, fruit cups in gel, cheez-it crackers, oat and honey granola bars, and many other items.
The cost to sponsor one child per weekend is approximately $3. From December though June, the cost to sponsor one child for one weekend per month throughout the period is $20.
Those wishing to sponsor a child can write checks to the South Covington United Methodist Women of God’s Covering Inc., and mail them to P.O. Box 429, Covington, Va. 24426. The South Covington United Methodist Women’s Mission Group will be packing the snacks for the children as well as distributing.
When all children in all schools are served for one weekend, the program will expand to an additional Friday. Good News Christian Fellowship and South Covington United Methodist Church will be the distribution points in the city of Covington. In Alleghany County, Persinger Chapel on Potts Creek Road will be the distribution point for Boiling Spring; Fletchers Chapel in Callaghan. The program is seeking additional churches that can be available two hours a month for distribution.
