BEDFORD(AP) – The son of a former Bedford County volunteer fire chief has pleaded guilty to embezzling money from the department.
Twenty-three-year-old Cory Shifflett pleaded guilty to seven counts Tuesday in Bedford County Circuit Court.
Shifflett, his father and mother were charged earlier this year with taking between $150,000 and $200,000 over two years.
His father, 51-year-old Jeffrey Shifflett, died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound the day after he was indicted on 14 forgery and embezzlement counts.
A trial is scheduled Jan. 19 for 38-year-old Deborah Shifflett on 13 felony charges.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Randy Krantz says there was no plea agreement in Cory Shifflett’s case, and sentencing is up to the judge. No date has been set.
