CLIFTON FORGE – Classes in watercolor, oil painting, drawing, and photo transfer are being offered this fall at the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center at 439 W. Ridgeway Street, Clifton Forge.
Watercolor
Tuesdays Oct. 20 through Dec. 1 (six weeks, no class Thanksgiving week) 6 until 8 p.m. Instructor Michael Farrar, fee $75, ages 12 and older.
Basic supplies will be available for use the first class or a materials list is available upon registration. Students are responsible for their own supplies. Beginning students will develop fundamental knowledge of materials and techniques used in painting with traditional transparent watercolor. Intermediate students will learn more about the tools and techniques of traditional watercolor and how to use them to their best advantage to establish a personal style.
Students will work with still life, landscape, and personal photographs, selection of brushes, paper, the properties of color, the use of contrast, lost and found edges and other techniques to establish depth and create an interesting painting.
Oil Or Acrylic Painting
Tuesdays, Oct. 20 through Dec. 1 (six weeks, no class Thanksgiving week) 2 to 4 p.m. Instructor Michael Farrar, fee $75, ages 12 and older.
Basic supplies will be available for use the first class or a materials list is available upon registration. Students are responsible for their own supplies. Beginning and intermediate students work with traditional painting techniques. The class will focus on the technical and expressive elements of oil painting. Beginning students become familiar with paints, mediums and paint handling. Intermediate students will expand their skills and begin to establish a personal style.
Topics covered include selection, use and care of brushes, selection of canvas, stretchers, painting surface preparation, color and palette layout, color mixing and use. Composition, design and techniques used to achieve different effects and moods also included. Small class size allows plenty of individual one-on-one instruction.
Drawing
Tuesdays Oct. 20 through Dec. 1 (six weeks, no class Thanksgiving week) 6 until 8 p.m. Instructor Michael Farrar, fee $75, ages 12 and older.
Basic supplies will be available for use the first class or bring a number 2 pencil and 11 by 14 inch pad of 80-pound Strathmore drawing paper. Other basic materials may be purchased following the first class. Students are responsible for their own supplies.
Drawing skills are basic for working with any medium. This is a class for students who want to learn basic techniques as well as for those who want to improve their drawing skills and refine control of carious drawing media. Students will become more comfortable with pencil and charcoal. Subject matter includes still life, figure and landscape subjects. Topics will include work beyond the basics in line, value, gesture and perspective.
Photo Transfer
Saturdays Oct. 31 through Dec. 19. (six weeks, no class Thanksgiving week), Ages 16 and older, minimum three students, maximum eight students. The fee is $90 and includes paint, paper, medium, and 10 black and white copies.
Students will combine acrylic paint and photographs along with paint, pen and pencil for unique images. Paint and papers, medium will be supplied. Other optional supplies will be discussed the first class. Students will supply watercolor and/or acrylic brushes and photographic images. Photos will not be harmed. An example of the work is on display at the center.
