CHARLOTTESVILLE – As part of a doubleheader this past Friday night, the first game between Covington and Charlottesville was a makeup game from July 9th that was suspended to the weather conditions. With the TomSox leading 2-1 in the fifth inning when play resumed, the home team erupted with nine runs across the next three innings to cruise to an 11-1 Valley Baseball League victory over the Lumberjacks at Charlottesville High School.
With a slim 4-1 advantage in the bottom of the 7th inning. Charlottesville busted the game open with four runs in the inning with the help from Covington who committed a throwing error with the bases loaded which allowed three runs to score.
Covington’s offense never could find a groove. Despite collecting singles in the 6-8th innings, the Lumberjacks offense could not take advantage with runners on base.
Thomas Marsala (2-for-4) and Dariel Castillo (2-for-3) led the Jacks’ with two hits apiece.
Kevin Rodriguez suffered the loss for Covington after giving up seven runs (three earned) in four innings on the mound.
Nick Parham (2-for-2) led the TomSox with four RBI’s.
The Lumberjacks defense had a rough go in the first game with five total errors.
