WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Dorothy Buettner Skoggard, 92, resident of Bermuda Village Retirement Center, Winston-Salem, N.C., passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, after a brief illness.
She was born Oct. 2, 1917, in Queens, N.Y., to the late Arthur C. Buettner and Gertrude Delle Buettner.
Mrs. Skoggard attended William Smith College, where she was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. She was an honors graduate of Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, N.Y., through which she met her future husband, Carl O. Skoggard, with whom she enjoyed 41 years of life. The couple raised their two sons in Covington, and later resided in Darien, Conn., and Southern Shores, N.C. Dorothy was an avid reader, a gourmet cook, master bridge player, and a gardener specializing in irises. She is remembered by her children for having taught them respect for the truth and fair play. In Covington, she taught elementary school for many years and spearheaded efforts to build a new public library.
Surviving are her sons Carl Arthur Skoggard of New York, N.Y., and Mark Edward Skoggard and his wife, Matilda Cordon Skoggard, and her granddaughter Marguerite Skoggard Robinson of Winston-Salem.
A second granddaughter, Matilda Ehringhaus Skoggard preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Col. Charles H. Leet, Feb. 19, 2009.
A graveside service to celebrate her life will be conducted in Southern Shores, N.C. The time of the service is pending.
