PURCELLVILLE – The 2024 Valley Baseball League All-Star game was dominated by the North All-Star team as they crushed the South All-Stars 20-2 last Sunday night in Purcellville at Fireman’s Field home to the Cannons.
After two scoreless innings, the North busted the game open in the bottom of the third innings with a seven-run output, which was all started by Kyle Edwards (Strasburg) with a leadoff solo home run. Jaylen Hernandez (Winchester) provided a pair of RBIs on a two-run double. The North would score three runs in the inning on multiple errors and a wild pitch.
With the game steadily in the hands of the North All-Stars, the team would erupt once again in the following inning in the fourth with six more runs, including Edwards second home run of the game, this time a two-run shot which put the North well in front at the time 13-0.
Edwards was named the ASG Most Valuable player after going 2-for-3 at the plate, along with two home runs, and four RBI’s. Hernandez and Shanley Wall (Winchester) each provided the North with three RBIs in the victory. Connor Chisholm (Strasburg) also had a home run in the win.
It was a struggle offensively throughout the game for the South until the ninth inning when the offense collected half of the teams’ total hits. Noah Canterbury (Staunton) and Jacob Payne (Staunton), both representing the Braves, provided RBI singles. The South collected just six total hits.
Covington had five players represented on the South All-Star team. Chenar Brown (0-for-2), Jackson Toberman (0-for-2), and Kaleb Henry (0-for-2), were a combined 0-for-6 at the plate with a pair of strikeouts (both in Henry’s at-bats).
The Lumberjacks two All-Star pitchers – Jorge A. Garcia III pitched in relief during the fourth inning after the South had given up six runs. Garcia III gave up a pair of unearned runs in the inning and two hits. Meanwhile, Cesar Valera was arguably the most effective as he tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the South. Valera gave up two hits, a walk, and struck out one in his only inning appearance.
The home favorite slugger Victor Figueroa (Purcellville) won the home run derby contest the previous night on Saturday.
