WestRock in Covington will lay off 67 employees later this month in response to the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rebecca Johnson, communications manager for the Covington mill, said the layoffs will come when one paper machine is taken off line.
She said the layoffs will be temporary and they are expected to last for 30 days, depending on market conditions.
“As a company, we match our production with our customer demand,” Johnson said.
About 1,000 employees work at the mill. It is the Alleghany Highlands’ largest employer.
The mill manufactures bleached paperboard used in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetic, electronic, greeting card, tobacco and food products markets.
