Thelma Louise Stull Humphries
Thelma Louise Stull Humphries went to be with her “dear Lord and sweet Jesus” on February 13, 2024, after 99+ years of living joyfully. She was born November 17, 1924, in Rich Patch, VA, to Cora (Bush) and Ralph West Stull. In addition to her parents and siblings, Melvin Stull, Gladys Humphreys, Hallie Rose, Kenneth Stull, and Ruby Stull, she was preceded in death by her great love and husband, Reginald Lucas Humphries. A lifelong resident of Covington, VA, she lived independently for 38 years after Reg died, insistent on mowing her lawn and washing her windows into her late 80s.
Faith was central to her life and her enduring happiness. She joined Edgemont Methodist Church at 10 years old, which later became Parrish Court United Methodist Church where she remained a devoted member. She served the church as a kindergarten Sunday school teacher for 32 years, sang in the choir, chaired the hospitality committee, worked vacation bible school, and cooked meals for the men’s club, women’s committee functions, and anyone who popped up on the prayer chain.
Louise played softball, basketball, and was a trophy-winning bowler. Whether it was a sport, telling a story, caring for her family, or cleaning her house, she was fiercely dedicated to doing it well. Continuing to live under her angel wings are her daughter, Shelia Humphries Pyle (Staunton, VA); her son, Reginald Wayne Humphries (Lorton, VA); granddaughters Denise R. Hall (Glen Allen, VA) and Lori K. Pyle with husband, Kurt Johnson (Harrisonburg, VA); her greatest pride, great-granddaughter, Cora Brooke Hall (Glen Allen, VA); many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins, special friends Meg Jackson, Jim and Kitty Skeens, and Becky Redmond, plus all of her church family and neighbors who looked out for her, especially in her later years. May we all remain uplifted by Louise’s generous, loving nature and her sense of humor.
The family expresses their deep appreciation to the caring staff at the Brian Center. Thanks for helping her sing her way through her last days.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alleghany Humane Society, Parrish Court United Methodist Church, or a charity of your choice.
We will celebrate Louise’s life at Arritt Funeral Home on Friday, February 16, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Visitation with family begins at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Alleghany Memorial Park.
