The final week of the high school football regular season is here.
Already!
It seems like just a few weeks that teams were getting ready for the start of the season.
Yet here we are. One final week before the start of the playoffs and a lot of uncertainty remains.
In the week 5 VHSL Power Rankings; Alleghany (8-1, 4-1 Three Rivers) and Bath County (9-0, 3-0 Pioneer) remained in the same spots as the previous two weeks.
For the second week in a row, there were no changes in the top-5 of the Class C, Region 3.
Alleghany picked up their eighth win of the season following a 57-0 victory on the road against James River.
If the season were to end today – the Cougars would finish as the 5-seed and would head on the road to Penn Laird to play the 4-seeded Spotswood.
AHS and the Trailblazers have been locked in at the 4-5 seed now for several weeks and are on a collision course to meet up in the first round of the playoffs.
Spotswood plays at Turner Ashby (ranked 2nd) on Friday for the Valley District Championship. The Trailblazers with a win very likely could jump from 4 to 2. That would all depend on the outcome of the Rustburg game. The Red Devils hosts Glass Friday evening.
Many different scenarios could play out from 2-5. Alleghany leapfrogging Spotswood is still not out of the question. The Cougars host Floyd County in their regular season finale. In all likelihood AHS will wind up the 5-seed.
There were a few changes to the Class 1, Region C top 8. George Wythe jumped Narrows from 3rd to 4th place. The Maroons blasted top-ranked Grayson County on the road 23-0. The Blue Devils did remain first in the region in this week’s rankings.
Bath County stayed in second, while gaining ground in total points on Grayson County (see below the full rankings).
Much like the Class 3, there are a lot of scenarios that can play out after Friday’s games.
The Chargers with a win would not only clinch the Pioneer District championship but would also lock in a top-2 seed in the region. BCHS very well could jump ahead of Grayson County even if they pull out a victory over Galax at home.
Nonetheless, there is still so much football left to go before we can determine playoff seedings and matchups. There is a ton of excitement heading into the final week of the regular season with potential playoff matchups.
Late Friday, early Saturday morning, we’ll find out who made into the top-8 and what first-round matchups we will see.
Until then, enjoy the final week of the regular season!
